Ragini Chant : Gem Stone-Painted Jewelry Boxes |
 |
The folk music of Rajasthan is as vibrant and vivacious as the gemstones found there. Here a gemstone artist paints a gracious rajasthani lady called Ragini, dressed in a diaphanous skirt with a typically rajasthani design motif and a head covering which is brilliantly bordered with golden paint. She is strumming the musical veena, with her henna stained fingers and explore a soothing chant under the shade of a finely etched tree. The peacock in the tree and the deer in the forest are drawn to the strains of her music. This painting on acrylic is beautifully offset with a border of brass and serves as the lid of the jewelry box whose recess is inlaid with velvet. The colors radiate with the brilliance of gemstones, which are finely ground almost to powder. A special resin is used to bind the powdered gemstones into a paint. The artist first sketches the subject of his inspiration on a sheet of acrylic. Then he fills the colors made from gemstones to create a painting that emanates a soft yet rich glow. This is then framed in Kadambh wood or whitewood depending which one serves best to enhance the painting. An unusual painting created by using precious and semi-precious gem stones.
